Mark Starman in the 21st Century started as a 2024 hard science fiction novel self-published on Amazon. The book, based on 1980s science fiction, followed the adventures of the titular ten-year-old boy who falls asleep in a secret government lab in 1985, and wakes up in the retro-futuristic world of 2085 when man has colonized the Solar System and the United Nations Navy defends against space pirates with fusion-powered space warships. Mark follows his closest relative, a junior officer, aboard his ship, the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis, where he goes on a series of missions to find a device that produces a rapid aging virus. The novel can be purchased in paperback or e-book format at this link: https://www.amazon.com/Mark-Starman-21st-Century-Sevin-ebook/dp/B0D2B21RFM
Later in March 2025, I started to write a comic strip loosely based on the novel. This comic had the same premise of Mark falling asleep for 100 years and fighting for the Navy in a 1980s retro-futuristic world, but changed the secret lab to a radioactive cave, changed the United Nations Navy to the future United States Navy, changed the setting years of 1985 and 2085 to 1981 and 2081 respectively, made Mark a midshipman instead of an informal fighter, made human colonization interstellar rather than interplanetary, and removed most of the characters and replaced them with new ones. Unfortunately, only two story arcs were completed before I was forced to cancel the comic due to my slow drawing speed and academic time commitments. You can still read the comics on this site if you wish.
I have revived Mark Starman again as a short story serial, where Mark once again falls asleep in a radioactive cave for 100 years and wakes up in 2081 A.D. However, in this world, nation-states have been replaced by competing private naval companies, defending clients against space pirates for voluntary subscription fees. Mark joins one of these private naval companies, the United Stellar Navy (USN), along with most of the same characters from the comic strip, aboard another starship called U.S.S. Indianapolis, and fights space pirates in the same way as in the previous two adaptations. If all goes well, the story will follow Mark’s personal journey and coming-of-age as a naval officer in training over six years. New chapters will be posted whenever I feel like it (ideally every week).
Although the Mark Starman short stories will be the main focus of this site, there is other content that I have written for this site. There are a number of parody songs, such as Star Wars parodies of Johnny Horton songs and Star Trek sea shanties. There is also a companion short story serial: Space Trudge, a parody of Star Trek, which will also be published whenever I feel like it. More features may be added in the future after I graduate high school. Enjoy!
